Those are exactly what I had in mind replacing with some quiet type of light 
dimmer.  Light dimmers, switching controllers, whatever you call them, they 
obey Fourier's discovery that square waves generate odd harmonics out to as 
close to infinity as the equipment will allow them, which is a long-handed 
way of saying they are terrific RFI generators.  Some know-nothings even 
call them rheostats.  But if they were, they wouldn't generate RFI, just 
warm your switch boxes.
