Glass tubes were substituted for- and speced for, as you
saw in the -GT markings- when available and approriate
from about mid-war on.
You see the reason in all kinds of sets:
shortage of strategic metals.
They switched nomenclature plates from plated brass,
which expended two needed metals plus paint,
to decals, fiberboard and/or aluminium.
Put an original TBYon the bench next to a TBY-8.
Heat one of the joints with your soldering iron.
You'll find the solder flows easily on the original TBY,
but you have to really heat-up the joint on the TBY-8.
That's because they were short lead in the solder mix,
which was needed to throw at the bad guys.
