Not all the -B equipment was aluminum since I have a BC-455B that's
black wrinkle. From what I can tell, the very early equipment and the
very late equipment was black wrinkle while the tweeners were bare
metal.
On tubes: Early equipment was built with metal tubes while later
SCR-274-N receivers were built with glass tubes. Glass was also used
sometimes during maintenance when metal wasn't available, although it
wasn't really authorized. (So whatcha gonna do, do what you're
supposed to or get the equipment running?)
I have also had AN/ARC-5 receivers pulled out of aircraft with glass
tubes in place of metal although I don't recall that any were
originally built that way.
Best regards,
Michael, WH7HG
