Bottom line, the stacked switcher blocks are OK, if you can live with
the
EMI. In my experience, it is pretty hard to suppress the spikes well,
even
with twisted pairs, ferrites, capacitors, and shielded boxes with
feedthroughs.
Hi John,
That's almost an entirely different topic. I have found that everything
digital contributes to the demise of weak signal reception. That often
seems to be a controversial statement but it really depends on our
definition of "weak" signal. S7? Slightly modulated band noise? Before I
moved I had some simpler radios set to run from batteries. When there
was any kind of power outage I turned those radios on. What a
difference! Almost all the digital crap was *gone* and I could hear!
People should try it sometime.
All that digital gee whiz really is nice and it's fun to play with lots
of features. You could even program your station to have all your qso's
for you and get an email report or read about your on-air activities in
your blog <wink>. But just one on the air session with those simple
radios when the power grid is down will let you know what you're
missing. I'm sure other members of the list have had that same
experience. I need to get my wire back up in the air!

Bill KU8H
