The fellow who now owns the Heathkit manual copyrights bought those rights from the Heathkit Company which is still in business.  They just don't make electronic kits anymore.

This reminds me of an instance a few years ago. A guy had some U.S. Navy and Signal Corps photos on his website. I wrote to ask if he would mind if I copied a couple. He tried to tell me he had the copyright to this material, and he'd discuss a "reasonable fee."  I laughed in his face and copied the photos, which were public domain paid for by the taxpayers.  I was just trying to be courteous.
