A well-known example comes from a letter written to CQ magazine more than
50 years ago that asked the Surplus editor if the TBX set really was a "ground
transportable [T] pigeon [B] used for identification and recognition [X]".

One of my favorite *real* JAN set nomenclatures is AN/USQ-42.

U = General Utility Use Installation
S = Special Type Equipment
Q = Special Purpose

That clearly pins down exactly what the AN/USQ-42 does!

(In fact, the AN/USQ-42 is a portable VHF receiver the size of the AN/PRC-25
that monitored signals from seismic intrusion detectors put out on trails and
around firebases in Vietnam. See http://www.prc68.com/I/USQ_Rx.shtml . I
found one at a gunshow for $20...the seller had no idea what it was, and
neither did I at the time.)
