I don't think I read it in'56 (I was 4).Probably in High School or 
early college.Way back then I found a bunch of Ham stuff on the 
curbside garbage pick up including a lot of old radio and ham 
books.Helped ignite the spark so to speak.

OK, found it in 1956 CQ Mobile handbook. Mod involved rewiring the two 
motor commutators from a "simplex lap" wound configuration to a 
"multiplex" type winding. Details pp 28 - 30. Required unsoldering and 
rewiring the connections to the motor commutator bars.
