I also have one of these transmitters. The chassis was obviously
taken from the AN/ARC-5 production stock, and the ATA
circuit installed. Though the confirming records are not
likely to ever again see daylight (unless one of us gets
a research grant that will support him and his family
in Washington for six months), the "replacement"
theory makes sense and fits the evidence.
The Smith doesn't loan out archived documents, does it?
