The brush holder is bakelite, IIRC.
Put the whole end assembly in an oven at about 
250 degrees for at least 45 minutes.
This will drive out the water that has accumulated 
in the brush holder, swelling it.  I know some 
disagree with this, but I've used it to free large
connector bakelite inserts and it's worked every time.
