While it's possible that such a technique would work, I know from bad
experience that you must tightly hold the can right against and below the roll that
the phenolic or whatever material disk sits on. Else the can will tend to
collapse below the roll. Back in the days when I did $1M+ business each year with
several local machine shops, I had one of them make me a die to re-form the
crimp in one pass. It worked OK once. The next two cans collapsed before the
crimp finished. I've always meant to make a collet that properly fit the
undisturbed half of the roll and try it again but never have.
