Hi Bob,

It depends on how accurate you want the radio to be. In mine, I took an
eXacto knife and very carefully cut around the edge of the mica insulator of
the capacitor can. Then I removed the old capacitors and put new, mylar
capacitors in the can. Drill a small hole in the bottom of the can and
stick the ground capacitor leads out through it where you can solder them as
was done in the original can. The lugs on the mica insulator have holes in
them so you can remove the old leads and insert the new. Then, all you have
to do is place the insulator where it belongs and carefully run a bead of
epoxy around the edge. With care, it will be very difficult to detect the
repair. Practice on one if you have a junker radio.

I have done this in three receivers and it is really not too difficult.

Subject: [ARC5] ARC-5 repair

Sorry for such a noob sort of question, but last night I found several
bad bypass capacitors in my BC-453. It was howling like crazy so I
soldered an alligator clip onto one end of a .05uf and started probing
with the free end, and before I had it stable I had to make two more.
So, what is the best practice for repairing or replacing the 3 section
cans that are bolted to the sidewall? I don't suppose I'd need as
much mechanical support as the can provides, but I hate to have parts
just dangling out in space. It's my first time fixing a command receiver.

Thanks and 73,
Bob W9RAN
