There is an option for the RU-16 and -17 to be used as standalone
receivers, like the RU-18/-19, or paired with some other transmitter 
than the GF series.

Basically it consisted of a dummy plug for the junction box that took
the place of the cable to the transmitter control box.

I'm not sure of how often it was used, but my RU-16 junction box
came with the dummy plug in place.

I second Mike's comment about collecting RAX-1 equipment. It has
taken me about 10 years to collect 95% of a set.  The receivers
do show up from time to time, although most of them seem to be
pretty badly hacked. The racks are a bit more scarce, but the
junction box and the required connectors are exceptionally hard
to come by. After that are the canvas slip covers.......
