I have been corrected by Robert Downs, WA5CAB on the 
following:

The three-position mode switch on the transmitter control box of at 
least some models is labled MCW CW VOICE. The 12J5 in at 
least one of the modulators is the tone oscillator, not a speech 
amp.

There were two different modulators. One screen-modulated the 
finals, the other was a plate modulator.

As I understand it, ARC got rid of the screen modulator rather 
early.

Also, I want to make sure you know that the BC-442 antenna relay 
WAS keyed. The antenna relay mounted inside the transmitter may 
not have been.
