[ARC5] SCR-274N on 30 meters??

I am currently dealing with a fellow in the northwest 
(not on the net) who is looking to sell some 274N equipment.
He says he has a factory-original Western Electric SCR-274N 
transmitter that operates from 9.1 to 13.5 MC.  
It's an unpainted set with the tag stamped : MOD G.
He says the dial is engraved, not a paint-over.
After asking some questions, it *sounds* 
like it might be a factory mod.
Anyone ever heard even a hint of such a thing?
Will share photos when he sends them (snail mail).
Sure would hate to spend money on a ham mod.
Any ideas?
