Good Morning, Roger.
I have documentation in a sectional around here somewhere
of how the U.S. established in the South Pacific,  a sort of
"picket line" of ships and islands with launches along the
major bomber and transport flight routes.  The sectional
gives the same 4 MC emergency calling frequency
all along the routes.
This makes sense to me, because it was a "given" that major
aircraft would have some form of HF installed, while many
might never get fitted with VHF before they were sent to the
scrap yards at the end of the war.
