Ah, Kludge is at it again with yet another sequel. Will they *never* end?
First, I have a huge favor to ask. My junque box ... er, collection
of A.R.C. spare parts; parts units; broken racks, mounts and
connectors; widgets; thingamabobs & whatchamacallits doesn't exist.
This is pretty much a bad thing and will become worse when it comes
time to fix equipment and make it right as well as manufacture the
occasional missing piece from other pieces. If anyone has any items
of this order they can do without even down to screws, I'd like to
work out some sort of arrangement.
Thank you.
Now on to questions ...
1. I have a Type 12 portable communicator and its documentation, and I
have an RAJ manual. I have seen reference at Twinbeech to SCR-274-N
equipment being used in a control tower in England during the war.
These are the only non-aircraft installations for which I have any
reference for A.R.C. equipment. Does anyone have anything covering
any others - vehicle, boat, fixed or portable - using any type of
A.R.C. equipment? I know very well that as soon as I state there were
no others it's going to come back to bite me and I've been bitten
quite enough of late, thank you.
2. The original Model B based GF produced 1.5 watts output while the
GF-1, also Model B based, produced 3 watts. What was the difference
between them and were there any SCR-A*-183 transmitters that
corresponded to the GF-1?
3. What's the difference between ARA and ARA-2 receivers?
4. How did the BC-695 and BC-699 differ from the BC-942 and BC-950?
5. I'm trying to develop a pool of information about the
SCR-A*-183/-283 like I have about the GF/RU equipment, that being the
basic components used in each version and the coils included with the
frequency coverage of each. This would be found in TM 11-200 and the
documentation for sets not covered by that manual. Interchangeability
would be nice too since I know not all coil sets played well with
other systems. Can anyone give me a hand with this? Also, does
anyone know of any interchangeability issues with the Model D based RU
receivers?
6. What was the difference between the DU, DV and DW DF equipment that
were intended for use with the RU and ARC-5 receivers (among others)?
7. Does anyone have any information on the AN/ARA-1 which was
supposedly a DF add-on to the SCR-274-N et al?
8. I've posted photos of the Chinese 339 receiver panel at
http://www.flickr.com/photos/wh7hg/. If someone could translate it
for me, I'd greatly appreciate it.
And now, on to pieces and parts …
Pretty much all of the manual requests are covered for now but never
fear, there will be more!
I now have an A.R.C. R-30B for a Type 21 (aka: ARN-59), and while Fair
has the antenna for the ARN-59 and I have a source for the power
supply, I still need the mounts, control head (A.R.C. C-59A) and
indicator (A.R.C. IN-12.) I also need all the connectors but I don't
know what they are yet. I also don't know the military designations
for the mounts, control head & indicator. Yet.
For the 18S-4 sitting gathering dusticles, while having a rack & mount
would be ubercool, I'll be happy with a mate to the rear connector. I
haven't yet decided its fate however CW on 80-20m seems likely as well
as 160 and/or 17m if I can stretch it a bit.
For the rest of the world, I need the following …
1.) In the ARC-5 and ARR-2 category:
One each: T-19, R-26, RE-2, J-17, C-35/ARR2 and two J-16s.
One each: MT-62, MT-70, MT-71, MT-76, MT-77, MT-85 & MT-98; two each
MT-4/ARR-2; and four each MT-5/ARR-2, MX-22 & MT-78.
One not virgin 52211 or BC-459 transmitter (for the 50s-60s station).
2.) In the Type 12 & Type 15 group:
One each: R-508/ARC (or 28 volt R-19), C-53 (ARC-60 CB, no military
designator found), C-1254 (C-1254/ARN-30), and a T-11* or T-13* tube
cover. At least one 24 volt J-13* (J-506/ARC) junction box. More
would be better. Three J-10 (J-502/ARC) and five (or more) 9375 or
14589 small connector caps in any combination.
One A-13 (AT-580A/ARN-30); two each M-11 (MT-1142/ARC) & L-10(A)
(AT-382/ARC), and three each M-12 (MT-1140/ARC) & A-15 or AN-104 in
any combination.
3.) Connectors (A.R.C. numbers but anything compatible is good.):
One each: 9126 & 16743; two each: 9124, 9589, 14050, 14320, 14491 &
16744; three 9821, five 9123, and eight 9125.
4.) Other stuff:
Tuning cables.
AM-26/AIC cover and mount, or enough information to fabricate them.
AN/ARC-1 control head (& mount?), front cover and connectors.
The parts and widgets to create a Yardeny tuned R-27 including an R-27.
Lots of period appropriate – figure somewhere in the 50s – or at least
a source for it or something close enough the difference won't be
noticeable.
One or two of the little round red & silver badges that appeared on
the front of some of their equipment.
A mount & connector for my BC-348-Q. (Okay, this isn't part of the
displays but it just isn't right without them.)
Again, this is all over and above what is already earmarked for me.
There will be more Type 12 later on so I can complete a Type 11 or
Type 17 set and the pieces to put together an early Type 15C (ARN-30
with no letters) since I have the rack for one. With that, I'll be
looking for an ATC or T-47/ART-13 later on with its mount and a few
other pieces include the best guess at a C-287. (Yes, I know. No one
else has ever heard of it and I can't find the documentation I saw
that shows it.) It would be cool to build up a complete ARC-39
installation to compare against a typical ARC-5 HF installation so
I'll be asking for parts for that later as well as enough to complete
a GF/RU once I know what will be coming.
The ATC et al are for the TBM installation as are the ARC-1 pieces
mentioned previously. Right now, I want to complete what I have going
before I do any expanding. Says so, right here in the fine print.
I've put more up on the blog and there's even more to come. Scary, isn't it.
Best regards,
Michael
