You can use the LM and BC-221 as an external BFO.Just lightly couple
the LM to the antenna terminal of the TCS or BC-348 and tune in a SSB
signal as you normally would with the internal BFO on.Zero beat to that
with the LM and then turn off the internal BFO.Adjust the output of the
LM so as not to overload the rx.This is far more stable for ssb
listening. You only have to adjust for drift once in a while, not evry
couple of minutes.

ps a Navy guy once told me that he and his buddies in school would set
up a short range net with LM's by keying the antenna wire.
You can hook up your long wire to the antenna terminal and listen to
all sorts of stuff too.

Subject: [ARC5] LM series
I have an LM-13 that has a small hatch in the carrying case looking like
the operator could use either battery or external source when the
batteries conked out without removing it from the case:
open hatch with fat screwdriver/dime,
pull internal battery plug,
insert external battery plug.
When casually cruising the AM bands with my TCS, I zero-beat the
frequency I'm interested in, then zero beat the TX, tune it up, and I'm
ready to roll. I read the frequency out of the cal book for use in the
QSL card later.
