I have an LM-13 that has a small hatch in the carrying case looking like
the operator could use either battery or external source when the
batteries conked out without removing it from the case:

open hatch with fat screwdriver/dime, 

pull internal battery plug, 

insert external battery plug.

 

When casually cruising the AM bands with my TCS, I zero-beat the
frequency I'm interested in, then zero beat the TX, tune it up, and I'm
ready to roll. I read the frequency out of the cal book for use in the
QSL card later.
