I didn't see any SO-239s or added holes in any of the gear in the link
Dave posted. I did see historical WWII gear being operated and enjoyed
in its original configuration, some 60 years later.

WWII surplus fighters were used extensively for many years in air
racing and much-modified as a result. Larger aircraft were converted
for executive use or other commercial uses like fire bombing. Many
still fly. WWII amphibious craft prowl the streets of Boston today,
sporting bright neon paint jobs and shuttling visitors on tours around
and through Boston Harbor.

Some people have worked extensively to preserve historical pieces and
many reside in museums today, inanimate objects in glass cases or
displayed on the floor while others are packed away in crates. Gordon
donated many fine pieces to NASM, Mike Hanz and others have assembled
extensive working collections, while others have modified surplus gear
to their own tastes, for their own use.

I don't see where any one prevents or encourages the other. Static
history is better than no history, but living history contributes
another level of depth and appreciation beyond silent interpretation.
