Mike is right, of course- In my frustration I spoke in haste about
the Navy in the PTO. That's not been my main study and I bow
to his superior knowledge of the Navy's aircraft, procedures
and actual deployments.
He would know more than I do about how the carrier aircraft
were tuned, Hue. I've had more success finding USAAF documents.
The evidence I have found for Navy aircraft HF use is not
as compelling, but still substantial.
I do know the USAAF was very slow to install VHF in their Pacific
Theater ships, probably for the same reason Army units in the
PTO got second-string everything: the "Germany First" policy.

P.S. Does anyone know for sure if the Japanese deployed
VHF gear- ground or air- in significant numbers,
other than the rare "TBY-like" infantry sets?
I've never seen any.
