That has been my experience as well.  The ~2.5kHz switching note is 
easily filtered out with a low pass filter (and already has a certain 
amount of attenuation in WWII aircraft receiver audio passbands), and if 
one wishes to adjust the output voltage to lower levels (good idea in 
these old sets), it's easier to accomplish than trying to change a 
dynamotor output voltage.
