Perhaps not. The Liaison sets were designed to communicate with ground based stations which could easily transmit high power to relatively poor airborne receivers. Good airborne transmitters would ensure a better received signal when it go to the
ground station.

Also, a piston aircraft would have been an electrically noisy environment. There is little point in being able to receive noise better.

I suspect it actually does make quite a lot of sense. After all, it's the overall link performance that matters.
