I just had an insight....
If I can find a short piece of steel pipe
that's inside diameter is about that of the outside
of the caps, I could use it to hold the can in the vice
without damage to the brass can itself.  That would allow
me to hacksaw right below the lip of the can and seal it
back with a glue bead.  hmmmmm.....
