Ah yes, I have seen those.

Comparing boxes, I see that you are correct about the widths. Perhaps the
mystery adapters were for some oddball non-standard.

Sharp readers will notice the "XA" in the C-428(XA)/ARR-15. The AAF looked
at the AN/ARR-15 (probably stealing one or two of the Navy's prototypes),
made a few control boxes, but apparently said "No, Thanks".
