I have a C-404A/A that has two metal pieces with Dzus fasteners added on the right and left sides so that it will mount in the standard 5.75 inch panel.
Most of the USAF C-40?/A series of controls have their components mounted such that they take up essentially all of the five inches available behind the panel. As a result, it would seem difficult to mount a USAF five inch panel in a USN five inch space.

Very interesting! I always wondered if there was a remote control box for the AN/ARR-15 before the C-733/ARR-15A.
The C-733A/ARR-15A and C-740/ART-13 make a nice combo for pilot control of these two sets, at least for USN aircraft. I didn't realize until I got a C-733A that the AN/ARR-15 has no provision for changing to CW mode except locally.
I wonder what the value was of remote control for the ART-13 using the C-87 or C-405, without having a way to likewise control an associated receiver. I've never seen any info that the USAAF/USAF used any receiver with their ART-13As other than BC-348s. It would be interesting to see some info that indicated that a few ARR-15s made it into USAF service as BC-348 replacements, if any actually did.
That made-up nonsense should be laid to rest about the R-648/ARR-41 replacing the USAF's BC-348. The R-648/ARR-41 was essentially an auxiliary receiver for the USN's RT-311/ARC-38. Both were Collins-made during the same time period, with identical frequency coverage and modes of operation.
