I certainly support David's last post. VHF was very important, but not  
long enough range for long-range missions. Having flown as a  civilian 
pilot in the U.S. and overseas, until quite recently even passenger jets 
had HF radios. May still. You can't communicate much past line-of-sight 
with VHF, even though at 33,000 feet LOS is  a fair piece.
