A common way to contact towers during and long after
WWII.  Aircraft called towers on 3105-kc, towers would
reply on LF (e.g., BUR 278-kc, LAX 272-kc).  Calling
frequency later changed to 3023.5-kc.

Some towers could simplex on 4220-kc.  Victorville
(CA), for example.  Perhaps others could simplex on
6440-kc.
