Dave I am sending you a copy of a USN letter dated April 28 1931,
I think you will find it interesting. You may already have a copy, but
in case you don't here it is.

I have included it as an attachment. I really don't know how to work
the attachment process, so you may not receive it. Please e-mail
me if it works.

Subject: Radio - Model RU receiver - report on.

      1. The model RU receiver is superior to any aicraft
receiver in service today as regards sensitivity, ease of oper-
ation and upkeep. Its selecvity is apparently not quite as
good but this is undoubtedly due to it's greater sensitivity.

      2. The troubles to date with this receiver have been
largely installation troubles. There are several minor changes
which should be incorporated if any more of these receivers are
to be purchased. The connection box should be constructed and
the leads into it of such length that a pull on the shielded
cable will not cause a short between the "B" battery voltage
leads whick can easily happen in the present receivers. The
remote control tuning lead should be one foot longer than at
present. The tuning crank of the remove control unit should be
of stronger material so it cannot be so easily bent as at present,
The locking device and nut on the "ON" , "OFF" and "STAND BY"
switch should be improved as these loosen up in service frequent-
ly. If these receivers are to be operated from engine drive
generators the proper leads shoud be provided.

       3. It has been proved perfectly feasible to operate
the Model RU receiver from an engine drive battery charging
generator for their filament supply and the only trouble encount-
ered hass been in getting the voltage regulators set so that he
output voltage of the generators is correct for the receiver.
Once set properly the filament supply can be forgotten. The "B"
batteries supplied with the sets have been used for plate
supply.

	4.	In the F3B-1 airplane a single wire antenna from
behind the pilots' cockpit to the vertical stabliser has been
found sufficient and the mast antenna on the F4B-2 airplane has
been satisfactory although weighing more than the single wire
antenna. The location of the receiver in both planes has been
standardized by pIacing the receiver just aft of the baggage
compartment so that space remains for the carrying of the
rubber life boat.
