IMO, there are two possible causes of leakage in mica caps. The casing is
bakelite (phenol-formaldahyde ie: organic) It can absorb some moisture but can
also be attacked by micro-organisms, especially in hot-humid climates (PTO). I
have had bakelite Jones strips completely completely disintegrate in a lawn
sprinkler system.
Ceramic should have neither problem. Also, they could be lighter.
