There have already been some good posts on the caps,
but here is one more to consider. The leakage in
the caps in not a fixed constant. It is proportional
to time, the voltage across the cap and the increase in internal
temperature as heat is dissipated in the leakage.
So when you key the rig, the leakage starts out small and
increases in a non-linear fashion as the heat builds up
over the next fraction of a second. This is a major
cause of chirp in the rigs. The cruddy patina on the
output components is another.
Trust me- if you're going to run the rig, replace the caps.
