Early war construction specified rubber jacketed cables
or armored (heavy shielding braid) with the cable clamps.
When they found out that such wiring meant no repairs in
flight and long delays at repair depots, a change was released
OKing the use of a rubber grommet on the back of the connector
and open, or single wire point-to-point wiring.
I have an original wiring harness with single wires and grommets.
I also have original cables of the earlier types.

I suspect that any of the original rubber covered cabling,
assuming you could find it, will be bad by now.
Open wire for the Army was cloth covered, at least early on.
Original cloth covered wire would be prohibitively expensive.
I don't know if plastic covered was used officially in the Army,
although I have some plastic covered aircraft wire that is Army tagged.
The Navy ARC-5 open wire cables were white plastic covered.
The plastic is the same type that covers
the black telephone field wire.
I have a couple of partial harnesses somewhere.

Use fingernail polish. Don't tell anyone ;-).
