You are absolutely correct. The List is not Moderated only Subscribed users
can send messages to the list. Therefore, the user account in question that
sent the email is probably been either compromised or has a piece of MALWARE
running on the machine that sent the message.

I suspect he was expecting the moderator to have prevented those other
emails from happening.  Unfortunately, as far as I know, this list isn't
moderated (as in, every message does not need to be approved), and the
owner/moderator wasn't given the standard Tardis that would have let him go
back in time and prevent those messages from being sent to the list.
Happens every time.

My delete key still works wonders on the occasional spam, when it happens.

You can't stop all spam, except by being a tyrant and shutting down the
list.
