Run the ladder line all the way to the tuner, but
put a balun a couple of inches from the tuner
instead of using the balun that's in some tuners.
I do prefer 1:1 for a better balance on the ladder
line.  Look at the schematics of the baluns and 
see what I mean.  If there's a problem with tuning,
just add or remove a few feet of ladder line.  
Two-pole double-throw knife switches come in
handy.  Been using these things for years and years.
