[Antennas] GAP Vertical Antennas

Hello Clete,

If your friend is young (or rich) recommend the 18HT from HyGain. It
is 50 foot high and works excellently on 80m and upwards. On 15m and
10m it has cophased elements with about 2 dB gain, but more
importantly it gets rid of the high angle radiation from the antenna
on higher frequencies.

I found a nice web page which has some pictures of installations - I
liked the vertical made from irrigation pipe. I've seen people who
make a 90 foot vertical, then use #12 copper weld as a top guy - I
forget what they did but it wasn't a dipole, I think they fed the
whole vertical and copperweld.

50 foot vertical works very well on 80, but not so well at 160 m with
a loading coil. I had one of these antennas for years, made tons on
contacts on 20, 40, and 80, and finally replaced it with an inverted L
antenna for 160m.

Also the Inverted-L is cheap and excellent antenna.
