I wonder if this is the same effect which comes in to play when tuning an
ant. matcher.
-- at a given inductance & freq., adding or subtracting capacitance beyond
certain high & low capacity points has little effect.

I am guessing that the horizontal leg of the Inv L is primarily "capacity
hat" (more or less capacity with more or less horizontal length), maybe
that's incorrect, I don't know...but, being that the horizontal leg is
barely directive leads me to believe I am right...that it is mostly the
capacity factor of the antenna system. 

So, adding or subtracting horizontal inches beyond certain points (at a
given inductance and freq.) is possibly, practically speaking, fruitless. 
...just theorizing from gross ignorance.
