I have in hand right now the handbook of vertical antennas written by Capt.
Paul H. Lee, USN , a.k.a. N6PL.
It turns out that contrary to belief, the Navy has space problems and a
majority of solutions for reducing deck clutter center on vertical antennas!
Yes, vertical antennas really produce a lower radiation angle, WHEN
INSTALLED OVER A GOOD GROUND PLANE. And remember, there IS a difference
between radials and ground plane!
The operating mechanism is entirely different.
BTW , inverted L antennas have a very strong vertical radiation element.
This is what accounts for the low radiation angle of such an antenna.
The vertical I use now is a hi Gain AQ-14 and I get from 4Zulu land to
central Europe wit S9+20dB consistently (2000 to 3000 miles). I'm still
concentrating in that area so that I can't vouch for anything farther, but
that is consistent with the home made vertical with a very indefinite ground
plane I used before. That one got for me stations from South America to
North Korea.
