Can not answer your first question.....but....on the second... 

I have had great luck with the plastic owl in keeping birds off my beams..but...crows 
do get used to them over time if they stay in the same spot for more than a month 
or two.

I set mine up so I can move it around from time to time....velcro works pretty good 
until the wind gets up there.....looks kind of odd to see an owl hanging up-side-down 
from a limb (beam element)......
