.....not entirely correct!
The G5RV relies on the ladder line as part of a phasing line in order to
avoid some high impedance situations that can be awkward for the tuner. It's
actually kind of matching network at certain frequencies .
When you give up the coax section and the balun- which, by the way, is more
of an isolation transformer- what you end up with is what was called the
doublet antenna, not necessarily resonant, and THAT is one of the best
general purpose antennas you can come up with! I am actually using one with
the top section about 100 feet long and use it on all bands with the antenna
tuner , an MFJ949D, set for balanced line operation. It works beautifully!
	This antenna can be anything from 1/8 lambda to a long wire
situation and will radiate wherever you can dream of. While in army service
we used one length from 2 to 30 MHz and played around with the tuner. It was
enough to have it operate correctly.
