Hi John,
I've used two element verticals several times and in several places.
The do work better than a single monopole.
There is a lot of info in the ARRL publications as well as ON4UN's.
The biggest problem is switching the feedlines to change the phasing,
directivity and gain.
Concerning radials...I have never buried a radial. I just lay the wire on the ground and every so often staple it down with whatever. By lawn mowing time next spring, they will be buried and out of sight forever !
I'm gonna do some of that antenna stuff myself pretty soon.

With the coming of the era of the low bands, once again, I'd like to
do better than a low dipole. I'd appreciate any info on getting started
with a vertical array. I am thinking starting with 2 elements might be
wiser than jumping in with a 4 square right off the bat. Additionally, if I
did
the 4 square, some would have to be in the woods (if that matters much).
Any pointers to interesting designs to start with , for 30 and / or 40m
would be appreciated.
Many thanks
