Hi,

I was first licensed as W9FFH in Evansville in 1948 while in high
school. I got my class "C" ticket from Evansville police captain, Lefty
Covert, whose call I don't remember. Never forget the 866s in his KW AM
rig flashing is cadence to his voice. Attended Purdue in 1949/1950 where I
operated W9YB the Purdue station while there. I think Bob Lay might have
been there then too.

My first QSL card was a pink ticket from the FCC in Seattle. Seems I was
operating my 40 meter Command set transmitter with AC on the filaments, and
the filament current went through the oscillator coil which was fine for
DC, but AC FM modulated the signal at 60 hertz. Who can beat this story?
