Mike,
Before you spend any money on a dual-band antenna or diplexer, use a
good antenna analyzer to view the SWR and Return Loss at both 2m and
70cm on your existing antenna. You may be pleasantly surprised to see
that your 2m antenna is also resonant at 70cm, since the latter is at
the third harmonic of the former. I do not have any experience with the
Hustler CGT-144 antenna, so I cannot state whether it will or will not
work at 70cm.
I have a 1/4 wave whip permanently mounted in the center of the roof of
my RAV4, simply because a longer (dual-band or gain) whip would hit the
garage door. My simple stinger is cut to be a perfect match at 147 MHz,
and it also matches at 441 MHz. Its response is broad enough that the
SWR is below 1.3 over both bands.
One caveat: Do NOT expect such "ideal" performance from a magnetic
mount antenna, or one that is not centered in the roof. Although gutter
and trunk-lip mount antennas are favored by those who cringe at the
thought of putting a hole in the roof, their performance is profoundly
erratic and frequency-dependent.
