[Antennas] Vertical Antenna Ideas ?

Hi All,

I used to have a vertical 10 meter element with 8 radial and with
the help of my ICOM AH-4 tunner I worked all bands from 80-6 on my IC-
706MKIIG, for better performance I build a vertical 20m loop using 
fiberglass fishing poles, performance increased and noise decreased, 
but the antenna was damaged 3 times from storms that are new to these 
parts...
I'm now seaking new ideas for verticals (I don't have the space for 
dipoles or yagies), I was thinking of  a closed bottom feed dipole 
(using ladder line - fed from the AH-4) anyone with experiance with a 
closed dipole ?

Can a markoni antenna be affectivly used for HF without a radial 
system ??
