Merv, your home-brew approach will work, but a home-brew r commercial 
W2DU type balun (ferrite beads around coax) may be more convenient and 
physically smaller.  There are many manufacturers of them (Unadilla, 
Radioworks, Wireman, etc.).  BTW, I used a BN-86 in the past and my 
recollection is that it handled a KW easily.
