[Antennas] Balun Versus Choke

At the risk of starting another religious war I would like to solicit
some input on baluns versus chokes.  I have a HyGain TH7 which has been
up for about 20 years - still works perfectly on all 3 bands.  However,
I've recently purchased a linear whose output exceeds the rating of the
BN86 balun on the TH7.  My inclination is just to wind a 6 or 8 turn
choke around a coffee can, remove the balun and forget it.  However, I
am willing to be persuaded to purchase a heavy duty balun.  Anyone with
any hard experience as to why I should do this?
