Hi Durwydd,

The recent QST has an interesting article rating readily
available antenna tuners. In a "nutshell" the bottom line is Link
Coupled Tuners like we used in the old days (and still use) are the
"Best" hands down, but today would be very expensive to sell
commercially. Read the instruction manual for the Johnson KW Matchbox.
That is a good place to start for the operation of link coupled Antenna
Tuners.
For a practical illustration of such please go to Jimmy's site
which is www.KJ9T.com and look under construction articles. You will see
how real pros use and build Antenna Tuners. The present day T-match is
ergonomically a wonder, but can heat up with high power when running
Teletype or other continuous carrier applications. Some modern Tuners
have gotten real hot and been damaged. Various articles have been
written over the years so you can go to the library and look up such in
CQ, Electric Radio, and QST magazines. If you are teaching a Ham Radio
Class the ARRL Radio Handbook is tops.
Again for a real world view of Antenna Tuners go to Jimmy's site
as mentioned above. Also please check Mr. L B Cebik's W4RNL site which
is www.Cebik.com and he posts on the "Antenna Reflector" now and then.
He is an expert and educator. Hope the above helps.
