[Antennas] G5RV/inverted vee: Radiation Angles

Durwyyd, "work" can mean many different things. Any conductor fed with
some r-f current will "work" in that it will radiate in r-f what it
doesn't turn into heat through internal loss. By"work" they may have
meant that the antenna would take power when mounted as an inverted-V
but not necessarily that it would radiate in the manner you desired.

It is generally true that almost any wire antenna can be erected as a
flat-top, sloper, inverted V, inverted L or whatever and manage to
"work" - some configurations are more favorable than others and are
chosen with an eye to the application.

If you wanted an antenna that was reasonably non-directional on 20,
30, and 40 then it might be hard to find a single antenna that would
fit that description other than a vertical. If you mount an inverted V
low enough to be non-directional on 40, it is probably high enough to
show some side lobe directivity on 20. Mount it up 60 ft or so in the
center and it will be directional on all three bands.

So, I wouldn't give Antennas West too hard a time - I suspect they are
in the business of selling antennas and not designing or recommending
antennas for specific applications. It is really pretty difficult to
think of a completely universal antenna that will perform as desired
on several amateur bands. The multi-band verticals probably come
closest since they all tend to be mostly non-directional in azimuth
and to have a variety of major elevation lobes depending upon the
band, their height and the soil conditions for many wavelengths around
them.
