It's not my story that's inconsistent...it's the puzzling results.  The MFJ does
indicate low SWR.  The Icom auto-tuner "on" tries tuning, and the Icom SWR detection
circuitry with auto tuner "off" reduces output when running on 40M only.

That's my original plea  ...What should I look for and how can I measure it ?  Or,
for the immediate moment, how can I make it work, and to heck with the reason ?
