Don't know about the HF-5V, but I have used the HF-6V and HF-9V
successfully. I mounted mine about 10' up, and used the Butternut style
radials for 10-40, plus one additional radial for 80 (suburban lot with
trees in the backyard precluded more). You need the radials, especially
for 80, to get the SWR below 1.5 at resonance. You should start by
assembling according to Butternut directions, but be prepared to retune
for your preferred portions of the bands. I don't know how they would
work at ground level.
