Keith,
Its not the wire size, but the length that is problem.  Make it the same
length as the old line was.
Not familiar with your model tuner, but dont think it is a "true"
balanced line tuner?   If line goes thru 
a 'balun' first before the tuner, the input impedance may not be
compatable with the new length of line you now have? Again try it with
the same length as old line was.
