Larry,
Yes, each generator should be grounded for safety, and each should be checked
to ensure that the neutral AND the "third prong" terminal are connected
together inside the generator and are solidly connected to the generator
frame. Next, ensure that ONLY three-conductor extension cords are used, and
that every plug and connector is in good condition. Discard any two-conductor
cords and any cords that have the grounding prong missing or damaged.
It is important that the RF ground for each antenna be solidly bonded to the
generator ground, so that every metal part that an operator can touch is at the
same potential. Be extremely wary of older power supplies that have
two-conductor power cords, and are usually marked, "For Indoor Use Only."
Ungrounded power supplies can develop dangerous voltages when connected to an
HF rig.
Only one generator should be used for each operating position. If two rigs are
side-by-side and are powered from two separate generators, a small leakage
current could cause 240 volts to appear between them. This happens rarely, but
the shock could ruin your day.
Lights at the operating positions should be low-voltage or in solidly-grounded
fixtures, if they are within reach. Indoor lamps and indoor coffee makers can
be extremely dangerous when used outdoors, especially in damp or wet areas. Be
safe, and enjoy Field Day!
